The Group Coordinator organizes many of the elements and logistics of your trip. This person:

· is the lead chaperone, and choreographs all the activities of the other attending chaperones.
· meets the deposit and payment commitments to Yosemite Institute.
· with other teachers, prepares students academically, behaviorally and physically for the rigors of the program.
· maintains contact with the principal of the school.
· designs and authorizes program elements and itineraries with the YI Program Director.
· selects chaperones who can meet the physical demands of hiking, model the inquisitive, enthusiastic, and cooperative behaviors you want your students to emulate, and supervise all your students fairly and equitably.

As the group coordinator, you will be expected to fully participate in most YI activities. Sometimes you might be asked to remain an eager observer who allows students to come up with their own answers to questions and solutions to challenges.

Daily hikes are part of your program and being in good physical shape makes hiking all the more enjoyable. You should be prepared to hike 5 miles at 4,000 to 7,000 feet in elevation. It is a good idea to take at least a few 3-5 mile walks/hikes before you arrive in Yosemite so that you are prepared for physical activity in the outdoors.
