What is my role as chaperone?

The job of a YI chaperone is wonderfully rewarding, but also demanding. Your role will be to supervise students at all times, especially in public areas, and to support Yosemite Institute's safety and emergency procedures in the field. Your students' whereabouts and safety are your responsibility.

Your attitude and how you fulfill your duties strongly affects the experiences your students have in Yosemite. A positive attitude can be infectious. Rain, unavoidable changes in the program and lengthy challenge hikes need to be accompanied by your smiles, flexibility, cooperation, and encouragement.

Chaperone responsibilities are to:

· account for the whereabouts of your students at all times.

· be enthusiastic and encouraging and model appropriate behaviors.

· hold students accountable for their actions and support the disciplinary actions and decisions of staff, when necessary.

· support emergency procedures as directed by YI staff; call 911, if necessary.

· supervise students during meals and clean-ups, and in the cabins (quiet and in cabins at 9:30 p.m./lights out by 10 p.m.).

· administer medications, as directed by the Group Coordinator.

· promote active participation and learning.

· accompany students that are detained due to illness, injury or disciplinary reasons.
