One of the many wonders of Yosemite National Park is its diversity of
wildlife. Seeing an animal in its natural setting can be a most amazing experience! It is important to remember that we are visitors here and that our actions often impact the animals living in the park.
While you are in Yosemite you might see coyotes, mule deer, bobcats, and a variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Some of the more common animals that are a concern to participants are bears and mountain lions.
Black bears are frequently spotted in the park from the months of June-October. The bears usually keep their distance and are not interested in human activity. If you obey the rules of no food in cabins or cars,
your view of these beautiful creatures will remain as distant as you choose. Storage boxes are available if it is necessary to store certain food items.
Mountain lions rarely make a public appearance. Yosemite Institute instructors are aware of areas in which mountain lions have been spotted and take the necessary precautions to keep you safe. Mountain lions prefer to keep their distance and have never posed a serious threat to any of our participants.
