Wilderness Conditions Update

January 23, 2001

Winter-like conditions exist on all park trails. Current snow level is approximately 4000' feet with snow depth varying from several inches to nearly a foot at the highest elevations. Conditions this time of year can be quite variable. Weather can change dramatically in a single day from bright sunshine to afternoon thunder or snowstorms. Periods of warm weather between storms can melt out snow on south facing slopes making nordic skiing marginal in these areas. All hikers should check park visitor centers for up-to-date weather and trail conditions prior to beginning any trip, and be prepared for sudden changes in weather. Warm, synthetic or wool clothing, and raingear are a must. Even day hikers should be prepared for an emergency bivouac, and carry plenty of food and water.

Recent temperatures in Yosemite Valley, which lies at 4000 feet, have varied from the low 40s to low 50s in the day and the high teens to low 30s at night. Temperatures at higher elevations are generally 5 degrees cooler per thousand feet. Nighttime temperatures at the highest elevations have ranged from sub zero to the high teens, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid 40s. Temperatures will remain cool as we proceed through winter.

The Half Dome Cables are down for the season. The winter route for the Vernal Nevada Falls corridor is now in effect. Check park visitor centers for exact route.

Visitors doing day hikes from Yosemite Valley are encouraged to use trails on the Valley floor. Trails that ascend to the Valley rim can be slippery due to snow and ice. Cliffs above these trails also tend to shed rock and ice onto the trail. Hikers using these trails should have good footwear and be alert for winter hazards.

The Tenaya Creek Bridge above Mirror Lake remains out after the Jan 1997 flood. This is the last of the 35 bridges damaged or destroyed by the Flood, to be repaired.

The Tioga and Glacier Point Roads are closed due to snow and ice. Both roads generally remain closed until mid May or early June depending on snow depths. Call 209/372-0200 for the most up to date road conditions.
